IPHIGENEIA
“Iphigeneia” is a Greek-language, short, drama film Written and Directed by Alex Machlouzarides-Shalit.
This film aims to capture the emotional turbulence of anticipating frightening news, the strength needed to navigate generational trauma and one’s own journey to deal with their past and presumed inevitable hereditary destiny. The film follows Iphigeneia, a 28-year-old single mother of a 2-year-old girl named Nefeli. The story takes place in the 24-hours between doctors’ appointments, as she tests and waits for her results for breast cancer. In this time, she struggles to juggle parenting her daughter and her work life as a waitress in a local café.
Throughout the film however, a second narrative plays out, which follows her mother’s own experience suffering from breast cancer while raising her as a child in the late 1990’s. The film constantly draws parallels narratively, emotionally and visually, between Iphigeneia and her mother, creating a poetic investigation and expression of generational and hereditary angst and fate. Although presented in a deeply realistic light, the film blends surreal and metaphorical aspects related to Iphigeneia’s fears and thoughts that appear to haunt her. The film blends hyper-realism with surrealist elements to present a pained, deeply private story in a restrained format, without overt sentimentality and melodrama, that it may resonate with anyone who has experienced similar anxieties. The character is tentatively named Iphigeneia for the perceived and destined maternal sacrifice made by the women in the generations of this family. It relates to ancient Greek mythology surrounding this historic character with great strength and resilience in the face of her fate being out of her control.
This film was partly inspired by Agnes Varda’s “Cleo from 5 to 7” and the Netflix series “Maid”, along with cinematic-language influences from Fellini, the Safdie Brothers and Ari Aster.
The film stars Maria Constantinou and introduces Nefeli Iordanous.

The film follows a young man rekindling with his old highschool crush, as he comes back home after years for christmas and runs into her at a bar one night.
