ABOUT ALEX

Alexander Machlouzarides-Shalit is an award-winning Cypriot Director and Filmmaker. He was born in New York in 1996 and moved to Cyprus in 2006. He completed a BA (Hons) Degree in Film Studies at Falmouth University, and an MA in Directing at MetFilmSchool London.

He has won multiple international awards for his short films. Most notably, "20 Euros", “The Morning After", "Leonidas and the Fish" and "In the Mood for Food". His films “Leonidas and the Fish” & "20 Euros" can also be found on MUBI and were featured and awarded at BAFTA, Academy Award & European Film Award qualifying festivals.

In 2023, he received a film grant from the Ministry of Culture for the short film “20 Euros”. It was Written, Directed & Edited by Alex Machlouzarides-Shalit, produced by A.B. Seahorse Productions. The film was awarded and praised at many high-ranking international festivals and was invited by multiple Hellenic Societies of different American States to be screened.

Alex was the Lead Director and Studio Operator of DIGITAL TV from October 2023 to October 2025, where he led and created all the commercials and podcasts produced by the company. He was the Cyprus Young Lions Film Category Gold winner and Cyprus’s representative at the 2025 Cannes Young Lions awards. He has led the juries of film festivals like the Liverpool Indie Film Festival, leading workshops like the Speed Filmmaking Workshop at the 2025 Cyprus Film Days. He has been continually writing, directing and filming short films and music videos as a freelancer.

He has participated in masterclasses with Sir Roger Deakins, Tim Roth, Lenny Abrahamson, and Giorgos Mavropsarides; attended the Cannes Film Festival 2019 with full accreditation, including its masterclasses, seminars, and screenings; and showcased his work with Q&A screenings at UP Film Club and Tapper Film Club in Cyprus.

Alex has many aspirations for future film projects, both short and long-form, that will hopefully bring a fresh, exciting, and at times outrageous new voice to the landscape of Cypriot cinema. Alex aims to create Cypriot stories for both local and international audiences and to help place Cyprus on the map of cinephiles and general audiences across the globe.
